One God, One Team

I was invited to speak to a group of 6th graders at MGC New Life Christian Academy two Fridays ago. I am help coach the boys varsity basketball teams.

I absolutely love this school. Anyway, every Friday they have this thing called Coral Reef and they wanted me to speak about "Teamwork."

The theme of the school this year is called “One God, One Team.”

I preached on Ecclesiasters 4:8-9 which says (NIV):

There was a man all alone;
he had neither son nor brother.
There was no end to his toil,
yet his eyes were not content with his wealth.
"For whom am I toiling," he asked,
"and why am I depriving myself of enjoyment?"
This too is meaningless—
a miserable business!

Two are better than one,
because they have a good return for their work.

They had worship and I was so encouraged because a couple of my players helped lead worship. They were playing the guitar and keyboard, while two volleyball players were leading worship.

I was so touched by the way worship and praised our God!

Many of the 6th graders I coach were there so that made it a lot of fun. I talked about the importance of teamwork and how we are all on God’s team and we all play an important role.

Acrostics work best for the youth in terms of idea retention so I decided to use the word T.E.A.M.

T - Trustworthy
How we all need to be trustworthy. I was able to speak about the importance of integrity in all areas of our lives.

And I tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of unrighteous wealth, so that when it fails they may receive you into the eternal dwellings. “One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much, and one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much. If then you have not been faithful in the unrighteous wealth, who will entrust to you the true riches? And if you have not been faithful in that which is another's, who will give you that which is your own? No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.”
(Luke 16:9-15 ESV)

E - Encourage
It is crucial to find ways to encourage one another and be each others' cheerleaders.

Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.
(1 Thessalonians 5:11 NIV)

A - Accept
How we should all accept one another unconditionally. Loving others as Jesus commanded us means it's not okay to talk behind other people' back or make fun of each other.

Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.
(Romans 15:7 NIV)

M - Motive
I urged everyone to always check their hearts and ask God to give them the right motive when they make their decisions. Through this, God will always get the glory in every area of their lives.

Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, but the Lord weighs the heart. (Proverbs 21:2 ESV)

I ended with the message with a clip found in the movie "Finding Nemo" where the little fish ended up sinking a big fishing boat. It was actually based on a true story. Apparently a gang of sardines sunk a large vessel some time back.

That's power of TEAMWORK. Let’s think beyond ourselves and work together advancing His Kingdom one person at a time. No one is insignificant. Everyone is called to minister.

Muntinlupa City Jail

The Philippine Alcatraz
"The Longest Yard 2"

I got invited to play with this team to go to the Muntinlupa Jail to play against their inmates. This is my second time in just a couple of months that I have been to a jail to play basketball and have a chance to reach out to the convicted.

This wasn’t presented as a ministry game but seeing how God works is amazing. This jail is absolutely enormous. The Muntinlupa is the most famous maximum security prison in the Philippines.

It is by far the biggest jail here in the Philippines and it is for the “high risk” inmates. Most of the inmates are there for murder and are serving life sentences.

One thing I noticed about the jail is that it was extremely organized and it was run very well.

So we finally get in and are getting ready to start the game. There were a few former professional basketball players on our team so the inmates were getting pretty excited.

I know I have said this so many times before, I am amazed on how big basketball is here in the Philippines. I really don’t think there is another place in the world where basketball is the # 1 sport.

Imagine what soccer is places like Europe and Africa, or baseball in the Dominican Republic. That is what the Philippines is for basketball.

Anyways, we played just before noon and the sun was absolutely SCORCHING. It was so hot and we were playing in the middle of this prison.

There were so many inmates watching the game. The place was a riot.

The first thing I noticed was the inmates uniforms they were all different. Apparently the jail is separated by gangs and they were wearing their particular gang.

Basketball is the only thing that brings these “gang members” together. The team is made up of the top players of each particular gang.

There are thousands of different gangs here in the Philippines. I thought that was quite interesting.

They really looked liked legit team. Many of the players were ex-collegiate players and one of the guys was an ex-professional player as well.

Apparently he is the best friend of one of former teammates. These guys were big and they were really good.

Well, to make a long story short I noticed that on the other side of the court there was a Seminary there. I met a man named “Pastor Red” who apparently is the person running the school.

It's amazing how God works! I started just asking him questions about the school, his story, and what God was doing in the jail.

He couldn’t stop talking and his face lit up just seeing how God is constantly at work. He was telling me how peaceful the jail is since they have started these “religious groups.”

After the conversation I told him that I was a missionary to the Philippines and he couldn’t believe it. He then invited me to the school after the game.

He told me that whenever I wanted to come back and do missions work I am always welcome. I am so grateful for this new and open door to reach out to the lost!

He told me that he could even get me a card so that I can come whenever I want and even have access to tour the whole facility. How God works is awesome.

Pastor Red has been featured on the Christian television show "The 700 Club" and even has a book written after him. I am looking forward to serving with this man in the future.

Back to the game, it was a close game and we ended up losing. The referees made some real horrible calls down the stretch that I believe cost us the game.

I wonder which side they were on!

But nevertheless it was all for fun anyways. I felt so safe the whole time and the people were so warm and loving.

I guess it’s one of the things I love about being a Filipino and this culture. I plan on visiting the jail every quarter of the year and have do some evangelistic basketball there.

The only thing that I was sad about, is they wouldn’t let me bring my camera and take pictures. I took a few but could not document all the wonderful things that took place. But I know I will always have those memories in my heart. How great is our God.

Prayer and Fasting 2010

In the beginning of each year as a church we pray and fast. This year was a little different for me during the fast.

I prayed really for a couple of things. First, I desperately wanted the Lord to give me wisdom and second, a healthy fear of Him.

I want wisdom that will help me discern what is from Him and the wisdom to obey where the Spirit is leading me.

I also prayed that God would ignite in me a healthy fear of Him.

Yes, I know that God is love and is full of mercy and grace. And it is a message that is so dear to my heart.

I pray that God would give me healthy fear not to misuse His grace and really love the things that He loves and hate the things that He hates.

God hates Sin but loves us so much. When I fall He is always quick to forgive you and me. But this year I want to go deeper in my walk with Him.

I want to get to know more of who says He is.

During the fast I felt so strong. While I am fasting sin really doesn’t seem enticing at all. There wasn’t much of a fight for me.

Normally I really have to fight the thoughts and desires of my flesh. I fight it with God’s word and who He says I am.

I am a new creation in Christ Jesus, the old has gone and the new has come. I am no longer enslaved to sin, but am free because of what Jesus Christ did for me.

There were some faith goals that I had and was believing God for. Here are some things that Samantha and I were praying for, and hope that you can keep us in your prayers.

  • We are really praying that Samantha would get pregnant and that we would have twins.
  • Financial stability and that we would pay off our debt.
  • Clarity on what exactly God wants me to do this year as far.

A couple of days after the fast God gave me a vision. I have never been so excited about something in my life.

I know God has called me to stay in this country and make an impact on the lives of people, but but mainly the youth of this nation. God has given me a vision to start a sports academy.

It was so clear that the vision came from Him. I will keep you posted on the developments. We are expecting great things from Him!

Please let us know how and what we can be praying for you. God is faithful and always there to meet our needs!

We love you,
Robert and Samantha

Note: I also have a new website that will be up this year: RobJOnFire.com. I will let you know when it’s up. We are currently looking for a designer to help us set it up. If you really want to get inspired, please follow Samantha on her own blog: Listening To His Voice. She just concluded the 21-Day Gratitude Challenge. Maybe you will want to start your own!

Looking Back on a Blessed 2009

Happy New Year to all of you our dear friends and family!

God has been so faithful to us this past year. We can honestly say this year that our walk with our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ has deepened so much.

This has been the first full year of living completely by faith for daily needs. Living on only prayer and financial support has been one of the most challenging and rewarding things.

When we don’t know how we are going to pay for our rent and other expenses that come up along the way, God pushes our backs to the ropes and only have Him to rely on. There has been so many super natural provisions this year that have been monumental in our lives.

From receiving checks from total stangers to getting vehicles when my car went into the shop for 4 months. The list goes on and on and each story is a testimony on how great our God truly is.

Prior to coming to the Philippines this past year we thought we had a good idea on what ministry to be involved in. But thank God He has his own agenda.

Our heart was just to serve wherever there was a need or wherever God had placed us. There were so many different things that we were involved in that you know of.

We weren’t sure how long we were going to be serving here in the Philippines, but after this year we are for certain that God wants us to stay here for the several years at least. There has been so many exciting things and doors that have been opening for ministry in 2010 and we couldn’t be more excited on how God is going to use us here.

We would like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for joining us on this incredible journey. We couldn’t do it without your prayers and financial support.

We always remember you in our prayers and think about you often. There are a lot of things that we are learning along the way too.

We want to better inform you on what’s going on, so this year we are creating a website that you can visit daily to see what we are up to over here. We have also started a Facebook Groups page called Carried to Completion that you can view as well.

We get so encouraged when we receive feedback from you so please continue to do that. We love you very much and here is a recap of God’s faithfulness this past year.

If you have a few more moments, here is a slideshow of our ministry and personal highlights for the year 2009.

2010 we believing God for a lot more things. We are in the process of starting a sports and education center for youth. We are doing all the necessary paper work to start a foundation here. The name is Hope City Foundation and will keep you posted on how things are coming along. It is something that has been close to my heart for the past 10 years and God is opening up doors for this. We hope to begin the breaking ground sometime this year.

Also, I have been offered as the Manila director for FCA, which is Fellowship of Christian Athletes. You can check www.fca.org for more information.

I know God has given us a platform to reach athletes here so we are praying whether or not God wants us to take on this position. It seems that most of the open doors for us in 2009 had something to do with reaching out through sports.

I will also be working with Pastor Miles Mcpherson from The Rock Church, in San Diego CA, as he and his team are preparing a Do Something event early next year. This is going to be real exciting for me because I have never been a part of something to this magnitude.

We are praying before the event there will be 1 million people in attendance and will hear the Gospel.

We are also planning on several Mission Trips throughout the Philippines and Southeast Asia this year.

But one thing that we truly are believing God for are children. If it was up to me, I want to have twins right away. We recently visited Samantha’s doctor to take all the necessary tests in preparation to conceive just in time for our third anniversary next month.

To assist in the process the doctor advised Samantha (who is turning 34 next month) to undergo fertility treatment starting next month. Please do keep this in your prayers as well.

Again, thank you so much for your partnership with us. Like I said we couldn’t do it without you.
We will do a better job keeping in touch with you. Please pray about continuing or increasing your partnership with us this year. Together we can truly make a difference.

In Christ,
Robert and Samantha Johnson

Outreach to Cebu City Jail

God always is about His agenda and not our own. I had a quick trip to Cebu and I was scheduled to fly back to Manila at noon.

The day before I was scheduled to fly back, I went through about 2 hours of trying to rebooking and trying to change flights. I was really in a tough dilemma.

Do I stay or do I go? Because there were prior commitments that I had. I was pondering on this question for 120 minutes of discomfort I finally decided to stay.

I had a flight from Cebu that was supposed to leave at noon. I received an invitation from the A.C.E.S (Athletes for Christ in Excellent Service) to join them in an outreach at the Cebu City Jail. It was right across from the world famous jail where the inmates perform the now-famous Thriller dance.

Talk about an experience. There were over 2,000 inmates at this Jail. I met a guy who murdered over 20 people for being a hitman for a particular gang.

I met a stud basketball player who really had chances of playing professional basketball who got put in jail because someone planted drugs at his house. From rapists, to murderers, drug users, to drug dushers to even former pastors in the jail.

This was my first time actually in a jail. And here we are a basketball team playing the Cebu City Jail All-Star selection basketball team.

How where they going to respond to us? Were they going to try and intimidate us? Were they planning on some type of jail break? Were these inmates up to something? A great time for a riot???

I had so many mixed emotions. There was definitely some fear and uncertainty, despite that, there was a confidence that I had knowing the Lord of Lords, the King of Kings, the Lord Almighty was with me.

We had to go through all types of screenings before they allowed us to go into the jail. They wouldn’t allow me to bring my camera, but thank God we had favor.

A police officer was assigned to use my camera and take pictures. When we finally got in all eyes were on us.

The hardcore inmates were staring at us. Then I heard some of them calling my name because they recognized me from the PBA. I then knew everything was going to be just fine.

We first went to place where they hold their church service there. We prayed and asked God to do a work in the hearts of the people.

Thy Kingdom come Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. After prayer we were fired up ready to go.

We walked to the basketball court and it felt like the movie The Longest Yard. The place went crazy when we stepped on the court.

We were having so much fun. I did a few of my “signature moves” to make them smile. The inmates were having so much fun. They were all smiling, laughing, it seemed like they were having the time of their life.

There was a guy on the team named Bow Wow who really amazed me. This guy was such a great player. He was a point guard and he scored 90% of the team’s points. He was slick with the ball. He could handle the ball a lot better than me that’s for sure. So much potential.

The barker was cracking me up so much. He was doing a play by play. One of the guys on the other team had a traveling violation, and he said the most memorable quote I have ever heard. Imagine with me for a minute. I am a Laker fan so let’s use this as an illustration. It went something like this.

Derrick Fisher passes to Kobe, Kobe drives and kicks out Odum, What a move by Odum, he kicks it out to Gasol…Gasol fakes makes a move…Traveling on Gasol…better yet, “GUILTY OF DRIBBLING THE BALL” -- that was pretty funny!

Well halftime came and this was the most exciting part because were going to be able to share the “Good News”. So we get up to introduce ourselves and guess what happens?

Our team starts to introduce themselves and each member trying to give a short encouragement. They had asked me to be the last guy so I would share the Gospel.

Then it starts raining and you see hundreds of inmates running back to their cells. The enemy was at work like he always is.

So I get on the microphone and gently tell them to come back, and some of them didn't but the majority went back. I guess the rain was like Kryptonite to them. I couldn’t believe what was going on.

Well I start to share how Jesus changed me and then I just get overwhelmed on how much God loves each one of them. I started to cry and I could see some of the inmates crying as well. I was struggling to speak Tagalog but I think they got the point.

I asked them if anyone wanted to have a second chance at life. Better yet, a third, fourth, and fifth, and so on because God gives us all those chances.

I shared to them the Gospel and asked them if anyone wanted to receive Jesus Christ. Hundreds of them raised their hands and accepted our precious Lord as their Lord and Savior.

We weren’t able to finish the game. But I know God’s spirit was there with us.

I pulled Bow Wow aside and encouraged him some more. Because he was one of the guys who raised his hands.

I gave him my favorite Nike shirt that says Believer. I told him that God loves him so much and has a great plan for his life. Bow Wow is scheduled for a hearing next year and hopefully in God's will, he gets released.

GOD IS SOOOOO GOOD!!! I am amazed on how He continues to use me here in this country. Always remember there is nothing that you can do that would make him love you more and there is nothing you can do that would make him love you any less. He loves you because of who you are.

Missions Trip To Tuguegarao (Cagayan Province)

Two weekends ago I went to Tuguegarao (Cagayan Province) for the first time. I was invited to join a group of missionaries from Buhay Sports to go on an evangelistic game with them.

We played 4 games in 48 hours and traveled over 500 kilometers (about 310 miles) by jeepney. We were able to play in front of thousands of fans and was able to preach the Gospel and share the love of Jesus to all of them.

Tuguegarao was also city that got hit hard by the typhoon Pepeng -- the storm that immediately followed hurricane Ketsana and hit the northern part of the Philippines in an equally disastrous manner. The people told us that for the past 2 weeks prior to our visit it has been raining non-stop.

Many people were severely affected by the typhoon. The day we got in was Friday morning. The sun was shining bright. They said it was the first time to sunshine.

We traveled to some very rural areas to play. The conditions were not the best. The first game we played the cement court was covered in dust. Nevertheless the people had a great time and we were able to share the love of God to them.

The second game we played in a big arena. It seated about 8 thousand people.

There were a couple thousand that came to the game. They asked me to share my testimony and share from my heart.

I was able to encourage them about a life without Christ is meaningless. I shared from my experience of having money, fame, and living the life of a professional basketball player in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). I was able to share with them the Gospel and we were able to hand out thousands of gospel tracts.

We played a couple of more games the following day and traveled so much. Zach -- a kid I have been spending a lot of time with and mentoring -- was able to go on the trip.

He is a privileged kid who has never been outside Metro Manila. He was able to see a part of the Philippines and see how some people actually live and where they do church.

He really said the trip really impacted his life so much and can’t wait to go on another one.

My hope is that I can do a trip like this at least once a month. I have been talking to some people who are really excited about the idea. Basketball is one of the best evangelistic tools here in this nation and it is my heart's desire to maximize my capacity to reach out in this area.

Please pray with me that God provides us enough funding (so that Samantha can join the trips as well), open doors to more cities and provinces in the Philippines, and most of all open hearts as these people hear about what Jesus Christ did for all of us.

Every time I come home from a missions trip I get so refreshed. The joy that it brings to my soul is immeasurable.

Two things that I absolutely love doing and two things I was born to do is play basketball and preach the Gospel. God is so good for providing opportunities for me and Samantha to get to do what we love doing every day.

Thank you so much for partnering with us -- your prayers and gifts have played an important role in allowing us to reach the lost for Jesus. Without all of you this will not be possible.

If there is anything specific we can pray for you -- please send us a message. We would love to hear from you!

Typhoon Ondoy (Hurricane Ketsana)

September 26th was supposed to be a big celebration for me. We sponsored a feeding program with the Real LIFE Foundation in the morning, then I was supposed to play in a golf tournament in the afternoon that I got invited to, and then have a surprise 70’s birthday party in the evening. Little did I know one of the worst storms that ever hit the Philippines was about to hit.

We pushed through with the feeding program even though it was raining. It was really humbling seeing the kids still come to the center for the food.

Actually I believe the kids really don’t just come there for the food, but for the love and affection they get. But anyways, we had to shut down early because the building started flooding.

We proceeded to go home, but the floods were getting worse and worse by the second. I have never seen anything like it, the flood waters was already waist-high.

It took us 5 hours to get home and actually got stuck in the flood. We finally got home and had no electricity.

We had to cancel all the plans and wait and see the aftermath of what had happened. The following day people got a glimpse of the damage that Ondoy had done.

Apparently the dams were getting ready to burst so they had to release the water. Thousands upon thousands of homes, cars, businesses, and people were flooded.

They say there was more water that fell in Metro Manila than Hurricane Katrina. Many of my friends and people I know were badly affected.

I actually lost a friend of mine named Tony Chua in the flood. He was the team manager of Red Bull, one of the teams in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA).

Mr. Chua was the main guy who was in my corner and wanting me to play basketball again. I lost 50 pounds in 3 months a lot of it was because of this man. He will surely be missed.

They canceled church all church services that Sunday and turned it into a relief and evacuation center. It was really mayhem here in Manila.

The phone lines were down, so you can imagine of people wondering if their friends and loved ones were okay. Because many had lost communication for more than 48 hours.

I am sure you have seen some of the videos of the damage. Over 300 people have been declared dead and that count is not yet the final tally.

The following day I went out with the Philippine Rowing Team to rescue some of the scholars and Pastors that were stranded in their homes. And I got to see first hand what these people were going through.

It was so sad. All the main roads were flooded, businesses, homes, cars, livestock, were all submerged and floating. Thousands upon thousands of people walking in the disease infested water to go to the market to get food. Some of them would walk as much as 5 hours in waist- and chest-high water.

We were out on the water for about 8 hours that day doing the little that we could do helping those get around and rescued a couple families. My heart totally went out to these people.

Especially seeing the children and some of the elderly people losing everything. Despite the conditions, I didn’t see to many people complaining, these Filipino people were doing their best to go along with life.

Doing what they can to support their families. I was really encouraged and inspired.

God promised in this world we will have trouble.

"I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." (John 16:3)

I am reminded by the wise and foolish builder in Matthew 7. The one who built his house on rock and sand.

Jesus was talking to believers. Both people who heard the word.

One heard the word and put it into practice, and the other heard the word and didn’t. My prayer is that we would be a people who are grounded on the rock so when storms come we will be able to stand strong.

I know God is shaking this nation. I believe he is shaking the foundations of the people here in the Philippines.

It’s amazing to see the church rise up and really be the hands and feet of Jesus. I am excited to see what will take place. One thing is for sure many people will come to the saving knowledge Jesus Christ our Lord.

Hoop for LIFE

For my 30th birthday (September 25th, 2009) I decided to have a benefit basketball game called Hoop for LIFE. It was a charity game to raise funds for the Real LIFE Foundation’s first Community Center.

Real LIFE is a foundation that focuses on scholarships and feeding programs for underprivileged students and families. I decided to call some of my friends from the Philippine Basketball Association (the premier professional basketball league) and have a fundraising game for the cause.

This was one of the most tiring things we have ever done. We had no experience at all in planning and hosting a high-profile charity event. God is good. He sent a lot of people our way who pitched in and helped make this event a success. We have a much deeper respect and appreciation for those who do these on a regular basis.

It’s really hard work and had to learn the hard way. Nevertheless it was a wonderful experience and we really learned a lot.

The event was a great success. God gets the credit 100%. He is good and faithful.

Initially it was only supposed to be a small pick up game on one of the cement courts in Pasig City. Really just wanted to bless the city and the community.

But it evolved, and I do believe God was behind it every step of the way. We were able to raise more than 500 thousand pesos worth of cash, products, and building materials.

The Pasig City Mayor Bobby Eusebio decided to partner with us. He provided the venue, security, and agreed to give all the paint and cement for the center.

We also had a special guest from my friend Nonito Donaire, Jr. a world boxing champion. He really has such a bright future and many believe he will be the next big thing behind Manny Pacquiao.

God has opened up so many doors with this event. We have learned so much in the process as well. God has used this event not only to impact lives but has also given Robert a vision and many dreams regarding basketball and ministry here in the Philippines.

I am so excited see to what God has in store for us here in the Philippines. He has opened up many doors for us from all walks of life. Because of all the media and print exposure I am getting request from people all over the country to want to do an event in their city.

I am so grateful that God has given me this platform of basketball here. Now I am getting a better idea of why He brought me here to this country and even to play in the PBA. And it is to do one thing. To glorify Him and Preach the Gospel. Share the love of Jesus Christ to those who haven’t heard and felt it. To God be the Glory.
